Cavapoos are small and active dogs that are the result of breeding a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle. They’re known for their obedience and intelligence, which means they will need a diet that can help them excel in day-to-day activities. High-end quality food is highly recommended and since these are small dogs, it shouldn’t be a problem. They do well on both dry and wet food.
In this article, we’ll talk about what does a Cavapoo’s diet looks like and which human foods can be used as treats, and which ones to avoid.
The Cavapoo Diet
Cavapoos are pretty energetic dogs and they are quite small. They grow between 9 and 14 inches in height and weigh between 8 and 20 pounds. It all depends on what type of Poodle was used. The Cavapoos that have a Standard Poodle as a parent are a bit bigger than those that have a Tiny Poodle parent.
These dogs can live up to 15 years and their food needs to be made for a small dog with medium levels of energy. You can opt for dry food, wet food, or homemade dog food. All that matters is that your pet gets all the nutrients it needs from its food. You should also keep in mind that they need to be fed twice a day, just like other dogs.
If your Cavapoo weighs up to 12 pounds, you will need to feed it up to 1 cup of dry food. And if it weighs between 13 and 20 pounds, then you’ll need to feed it 1 to 1/3 cups. But this is just to give you an idea of how much you will be spending on food. The exact amount you need to feed your dog will always be found on the package.
Can Cavapoos eat chicken? Raw or Cooked?
Whether you cook the chicken for your dog or not, it all depends on you and how experienced you are with raw foods. Cooked and raw chicken are not very different in terms of nutrients but a dog’s stomach is still made for raw prey, similar to their ancestors. If you choose to cook the chicken, make sure you’re not adding any spices or other harmful ingredients. You should also throw the cooked bones away instead of giving them to your dog as they splinter easily.
But if you’re thinking about a raw diet. You should take into consideration salmonella and other problems that can come with bad raw food. On the other hand, raw bones are much better and they can actually help clean a dog’s teeth.
How about Peanut Butter?
Peanut butter is a favorite snack for dogs. Its rich and nutty flavor makes for a very motivational reward during training as well. As long as you’re not feeding too much peanut butter to your pet, there’s no problem with it. The only thing you always need to keep in mind is to avoid peanut butter that has Xylitol. This is found in peanut butter made for diabetic people. It’s incredibly toxic to dogs and can even kill dogs in recovery.
Can Cavapoos eat eggs?
Eggs are loved by most dogs regardless of how you cook them. In fact, many dogs love them raw as well. But make sure the egg is safe (if you wouldn’t eat it then don’t give it to your dog because it seems old) and that you’re not adding anything while cooking. Any ingredients that we love can hurt the dog, especially spices.
Is Turkey Meat OK for Cavapoos?
Turkey meat is not dangerous for dogs at all. The only reason you might hear that is because of people that offer their dog Thanksgiving leftovers, which can cause some extreme health issues with a pet. This is because of all the onion, garlic, herbs, spices, and other added ingredients that have been added during cooking. You should either offer your dog plain turkey meat or none at all. And the bones need to be raw as the cooked ones splinter.
Can Cavapoos eat cheese?
Cheese is very popular and comes in very many shapes, textures, and sizes. Don’t feed your dog any type of cheese that is not plain. Most commercial cheeses contain lots of herbs and ingredients for flavor enhancement, which can make the dog sick. It’s also recommended to avoid blue cheeses as well.
Can Cavapoo Dogs Eat Apples?
Apples are great at keeping the vet away as well, especially when it comes to dental cleaning. They’re tasty fruits and a few slices can definitely be used each week during training. Apples can help clean a dog’s teeth and improve the breath. This is very helpful if the food it typically eats smells terrible to you. Just make sure to remove all the seeds as they release small amounts of cyanide in the body if broken.
How about Oranges?
Oranges need to be peeled and it’s best if your dog only eats a bit of the fleshy part. They’re high in acids and are not generally great fruits for dogs. You can get rid of your dog’s curiosity by giving him a small piece from time to time but no more than that. One piece a month or so is more than enough and they don’t do well as treats.
Can Cavapoos Eat Bananas?
Bananas should only be offered to your dog as an occasional treat once or twice a week. Too much banana can cause constipation and other issues so it’s important to keep a balance. If you’re training your pet, you can add a few slices of banana to the treat box as rewards and motivation.
Can Cavapoos eat grapes?
Grapes and raisins should be avoided when it comes to feeding your dog. They can’t be fed peeled or seedless either. There isn’t much information about why they are so toxic and why they affect dogs so differently, but the toxin substance inside them can easily get your big dog to the vet over a small hand of grapes.
Can you give them blueberries?
Blueberries are the best treats for dogs and can also be added to some meals. They’re low in calories, have antioxidants, vitamin C and K, and other benefits that help the immune system a lot. You can also use them as training rewards as most dogs love them and will get even more motivated to get a few of the delicious fruits.
